She also appeared in Parenthood, The Michael J. Fox Show , and Members Only. Brandt is set to appear in the upcoming Jim Jefferies sitcom called Jefferies.

Hank Schrader was Walter White's clever and morally sound brother-in-law who also happened to be a DEA agent. While this is arguably Norris' most popular role, he has been acting for some time.

He went on to star in the CBS series Under the Dome as well as in the TNT series Claws. He briefly reprised his role as Hank for the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.

But Norris is also a pretty prolific movie actor as well, having appeared in some big ones like Lethal Weapon 2, Hard To Kill, Total Recall, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Firm — the list goes on.

Anyone 30 or younger knows Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut from Breaking Bad , the former cop turned private investigator, fixer, and hitman who possesses a special set of skills.

Breaking Bad was shot on 35 mm movie film because of the robustness of the equipment and to keep a focus on shooting scenes economically.

Also it allows a later digital transfer to 4K Ultra HD resolution. Kelley Dixon was one of the few editors of Breaking Bad and edited many of the series' "meth montages".

For the montages, she would use techniques such as jump cuts and alternating the speed of the film, either faster or slower. But I think any good drama worth its weight always has a sprinkling of comedy in it, because you can ease the tension to an audience when it's necessary, and then build it back up again.

Walt White has no clue he's occasionally funny, but as an actor, I recognize when there are comedic moments and opportunities.

Having played so many cops, I've talked with a lot of technical advisers, so I've been able to pick up a lot.

Coincidentally, one of my best friends growing up is a cop in Chicago, and one of my other best friends out in LA is a sheriff.

So I get to see all the components of that culture. I thought about Robert Evans because I've listened to The Kid Stays in the Picture on CD.

He's constantly switching up his cadence and his delivery. He emphasizes interesting words. He has loads of attitude in almost every line that he says.

So when I rehearse the scenes alone I do my impersonation of Robert Evans to find those moments and turns. Then I go out and I do Saul.

Gus is the coolest cucumber that ever walked the Earth. I think about Eddie Olmos way back in Miami Vice. I thought, how is this guy just standing in this fire and doing nothing?

He's just confident. The complete series was released on DVD and Blu-ray on November 26, , in a collectable box shaped like one of the barrels used by Walt to bury his money.

The first season was originally intended to be nine episodes, but due to the — Writers Guild of America strike only seven episodes were filmed.

Walter, diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer , conspires with Jesse to cook methamphetamine "meth" as a way to pay for his treatment and provide financial security for his family.

Jesse secures a recreational vehicle to cook in, while Walter devises a production route using unregulated chemicals, creating a highly pure product tinted blue.

After a run-in with the Mexican drug cartel, Walter adopts the name "Heisenberg", with his "blue sky" meth his signature product.

Hank and the DEA become aware of this new figure in the drug trade and begin their investigation. Jesse's dealers become unsafe, and Walter hires a corrupt lawyer Saul to connect them to a high-profile drug dealer Gus as a buyer for their latest batch.

Jesse dates his apartment manager Jane, and she relapses on heroin; Jesse becomes unreliable. Walter refuses to pay him his half of the sale to Gus, but Jane blackmails Walter.

Walter returns to Jesse to apologize, but allows an unconscious Jane to choke on her own vomit. With Jesse in rehab, Walter seems content until he witnesses a midair collision of two planes, a result of Jane's father, an air-traffic controller, becoming distraught over her death while on the job.

On April 2, , AMC announced that Breaking Bad was renewed for a third, episode season. The complete third season was released on Region 1 DVD and Region A Blu-ray on June 7, Gus offers Walter a job cooking meth at a hidden lab.

Walter demands Jesse to be his assistant rather than Gus' choice of Gale. Skyler learns of Walter's meth cooking and demands a divorce.

Hank's investigation leads him to Jesse, but he finds no evidence and assaults Jesse, forcing him into a short leave. Hank is forewarned about an attack from two assassins, and kills them but he becomes paralyzed in the aftermath.

Jesse's behavior becomes erratic, and Gus replaces him with Gale. Later, Walter fears Gus will kill him and Jesse once Gale learns enough about their methods, and instructs Jesse to kill Gale.

On June 14, , AMC announced Breaking Bad was renewed for a fourth, episode season. Gus tightens security at the lab after Gale's death.

Gus and Mike work to drive a wedge between Walter and Jesse, seeking to coerce Jesse to be their solitary cook by capturing Walter while at the same time eliminating the Mexican cartel.

Skyler accepts Walter's meth cooking, and works with Saul to launder his earnings. Hank, while recovering, tracks Gale's death to Gus and the drug trade.

Gus releases Walter and plans to kill Hank. Walter tricks Jesse into turning against Gus, and convinces Hector to detonate a pipe bomb in the same room as Gus, killing them both.

On August 14, , AMC announced that Breaking Bad was renewed for a fifth and final season consisting of 16 episodes. The first half premiered on July 15, , while the second half premiered on August 11, When their accomplice Todd kills a child witness during their theft of methylamine, Jesse and Mike sell their share to Declan, another distributor.

Hank attempts to prove Walter is Heisenberg. Walter kills Mike when he demands his share of the money and hires Jack's gang to kill Mike's associates and Jesse.

The gang turns on Walter, kills Hank, captures Jesse, and takes most of Walter's money. Walter uses the remainder to escape to New Hampshire. After months in hiding, Walter intends to surrender, but changes course after Elliott and Gretchen minimize his involvement in starting Gray Matter.

He leaves his money in a trust which Elliott and Gretchen would administer for his children. He confesses to Skyler that he manufactured methamphetamine for his own satisfaction rather than his family's financial security.

At Jack's compound, Walter kills Jack and the rest of his gang with a remote controlled machine gun and frees the imprisoned Jesse, who kills Todd.

Wounded in the aftermath, he asks Jesse to kill him, but Jesse refuses. The two share a farewell glance, after which Jesse escapes.

Walter reminisces in Jack's meth lab and eventually dies. In an interview with The New York Times , creator Vince Gilligan said the larger lesson of the series is that "actions have consequences".

If religion is a reaction of man, and nothing more, it seems to me that it represents a human desire for wrongdoers to be punished.

I hate the idea of Idi Amin living in Saudi Arabia for the last 25 years of his life. That galls me to no end. I feel some sort of need for Biblical atonement, or justice, or something.

I like to believe there is some comeuppance, that karma kicks in at some point, even if it takes years or decades to happen.

My girlfriend says this great thing that's become my philosophy as well. But I can't not believe there's a hell. In a piece comparing the show to The Sopranos , Mad Men and The Wire , Chuck Klosterman said that Breaking Bad is "built on the uncomfortable premise that there's an irrefutable difference between what's right and what's wrong, and it's the only one where the characters have real control over how they choose to live".

Ross Douthat of The New York Times , in a response to Klosterman's piece, compared Breaking Bad and The Sopranos , stating that both series are " morality plays " that are "both interested in moral agency ".

Douthat went on to say that Walter White and Tony Soprano "represent mirror-image takes on the problem of evil, damnation, and free will".

Walter is a man who "deliberately abandons the light for the darkness" while Tony is "someone born and raised in darkness" who turns down "opportunity after opportunity to claw his way upward to the light".

The show explores most of the main characters' connections to their families in great detail. Walt justifies his decision to cook crystal meth and become a criminal because of his desire to provide for his family.

Gus convinces him to stay, telling him it is a man's job to provide for his family, even if he is unloved. Jesse's loneliness in the early seasons of the show can be partly explained by his parents' decision to kick him out of their home due to his drug-related activities.

This parental disconnect brings him closer to Jane, whose father berates her for her drug use. When Walt crosses paths with Jane's father, Walt refers to Jesse as his nephew and laments the fact that he cannot get through to him.

Jane's father responds by telling him to keep trying, saying, "Family. You can't give up on them, ever. What else is there? Even the show's more hardened characters maintain ties to family.

In the second season , Tuco Salamanca spends time caring for his physically disabled uncle, Hector. When Tuco is killed by Hank, his cousins vow revenge.

Their actions are further explained in a flashback, where Hector explains to the brothers that " La familia es todo " "Family is everything".

Gustavo Fring's franchise Los Pollos Hermanos translates to "The Chicken Brothers". This refers to the fact that the company was co-founded by Gus and a man named Max, with whom he shared a close personal connection.

When Max is killed by Hector Salamanca, Gus vows to destroy the Salamanca family. During the second part of the fifth season, white supremacist Jack Welker says "don't skimp on family", and he lets Walt live after capturing him in the desert because of love for his nephew Todd Alquist, who has great respect for Walt.

Lydia Rodarte-Quayle repeatedly demands that if Mike insists on killing her, that he leave her in her apartment so her daughter can find her, fearful she will think Lydia abandoned her.

Much like Walt and Mike, Lydia seems to engage in the meth business in order to provide for her daughter, with actress Laura Fraser stating in an interview that Lydia's daughter is important to how "Lydia justified what she did to herself".

A motif within the second season is the image of a damaged teddy bear and its missing eye. It is seen in flashforwards during four episodes, the titles of which, when put together in order, form the sentence " Seven Thirty-Seven down over ABQ ".

Vince Gilligan called the plane accident an attempt to visualize "all the terrible grief that Walt has wrought upon his loved ones" and "the judgment of God".

In the first episode of the third season , Walt finds the teddy bear's missing eye in the pool skimmer. Television critic Myles McNutt has called it "a symbol of the damage [Walter] feels responsible for", [96] and The A.

Club commented that "the pink teddy bear continues to accuse. The teddy bear prop was auctioned off, among other memorabilia, on September 29, , the air date of the show finale.

Walter White's name is reminiscent of the poet Walt Whitman. In the episode " Hazard Pay ", Walt finds the copy of Leaves of Grass as he is packing up his bedroom, briefly smiles and leaves it out to read.

This occurs at an especially high point in his life, where he feels that things are coming together and he is succeeding in all his ventures.

A poem in the book, "Song of Myself", is based on many of these same feelings, furthering the connection between Walt's life and Whitman's poetry.

It's an honour working with you. Fondly G. Breaking Bad received widespread critical acclaim and has been praised by many critics as one of the greatest television shows of all time.

For the first season, the series saw a generally positive reception. New York Post critic Linda Stasi praised the series, particularly the acting of Cranston and Paul, stating "Cranston and Paul are so good, it's astounding.

I'd say the two have created great chemistry, but I'm ashamed to say such a cheap thing. But even their scenes lean toward the suspenseful, as the duo learns that killing someone, even in self-defense, is ugly, messy work.

The second season saw critical acclaim. Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker stated " Bad is a superlatively fresh metaphor for a middle-age crisis: It took cancer and lawbreaking to jolt Walt out of his suburban stupor, to experience life again—to take chances, risk danger, do things he didn't think himself capable of doing.

None of this would work, of course, without Emmy winner Cranston's ferocious, funny selflessness as an actor. For all its bleakness and darkness, there's a glowing exhilaration about this series: It's a feel-good show about feeling really bad.

In fact, it looks as if Gilligan's bold vision for Breaking Bad , now duly rewarded against all odds, has invigorated everyone involved in the project.

You can sense its maturity and rising ambition in each episode. The third season also saw critical acclaim. Time proclaimed, "It's a drama that has chosen the slow burn over the flashy explosion, and it's all the hotter for that choice.

Club said that season three was "one of television's finest dramatic accomplishments. Season four won near-universal critical acclaim.

The Boston Globe referred to the show as a "taut exercise in withheld disaster" and declared the show "riveting". Club 's review of the finale summed it up as a "fantastically fitting end for a season that ran in slow motion, starting and continuing with so many crises begging for resolution week after week.

Now the decks are cleared, but that doesn't mean anybody is home free. Nothing's ever easy on Breaking Bad. Both halves of the fifth season received overwhelming critical acclaim.

Following the end of the series, critic Nick Harley summarized his commendation of the show: "Expertly written, virtuosic with its direction, and flawlessly performed, Breaking Bad is everything you could want in a drama.

Critics will spend the next decade dissecting and arguing about what made it great, but the reasons are endless and already well documented.

Martin , author of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, particularly the episode " Ozymandias "; Martin commented that "Walter White is a bigger monster than anyone in Westeros.

He lauded the rest of the cast and crew as well. Breaking Bad has been accused by some members of law enforcement and the legal community of normalizing or glorifying methamphetamine creation and usage.

Breaking Bad premiered on the same night as both the NFC and AFC Championships in the NFL playoffs , an intentional decision by AMC hoping to capture the adult male viewership immediately following the planned end of the NFC game.

As a result, the pilot had only about 1. Coupled with the ongoing writers strike, the first season did not draw as large of a viewership as they expected.

The series received numerous awards and nominations, including 16 Primetime Emmy Awards and 58 nominations, including winning for Outstanding Drama Series in and For his portrayal of Walter White, Bryan Cranston won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series four times, in , , , and Aaron Paul won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in , , and Paul also won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor on Television in and Anna Gunn won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in and For his work on season four, Giancarlo Esposito won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

In and , Breaking Bad won the TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama , as well as the TCA Award for Program of the Year in The series won the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Dramatic Series in both and Overall, the show has won industry awards and been nominated for Along with creator Vince Gilligan, fellow writers and producers Peter Gould , Thomas Schnauz , Gennifer Hutchison , Moira Walley-Beckett , Sam Catlin and George Mastras joined to discuss memories from the show's humble beginnings, character transformations that concluded in the final season as well as surprising developments along the way.

For instance, the character of Jesse Pinkman was originally supposed to die halfway through season one in a tragic drug deal gone horribly wrong.

The reasoning behind this decision was that Jesse served his purpose "in a meat-and-potatoes, logistical sense. However, this was eventually done away with as the story progressed beyond Gilligan's early scripts.

The series, which debuted on AMC in January , followed a high school chemistry teacher Walter White Bryan Cranston who begins cooking meth with his former student Jesse Pinkman Aaron Paul after learning he has stage-three lunch cancer.

The drama, created by Vince Gilligan got off to a slow start with critics, but by the second season, became one of the most talked-about shows on television.

Breaking Bad ran for five seasons, officially airing its season finale on September 29, Despite the very heavy content, the show was a hit from start to finish, earning 16 Primetime Emmy Awards out of 58 nominations.

The Guinness World Records named the show the most critically acclaimed of all-time in The cast, which also included Dean Norris , RJ Mitte , Betsey Brandt and Bob Odenkirk , all stayed close — and some have reprised their Breaking Bad roles.

In , Better Call Saul , a prequel of Breaking Bad , debuted on AMC. The spinoff will wrap in Additionally, a sequel film, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, was released on Netflix and in theaters in October Hector refuses to cooperate and defecates in his pants, much to the disgust of everyone in the interrogation room.

Afterwards, he is sent to a nursing home near Albuquerque. In season 3, The Cousins sneak into the U. They visit Hector, their uncle, who gives them Walter White's name.

When the hit is narrowly avoided through the intervention of Mike and Gus, The Cousins bring Hector to a meeting with Gus. Gus is able to postpone the hit for the time being by telling Hector that Walt is invaluable to the cartel's methamphetamine operations.

In the season 4 finale, Walt is able to convince Hector to help him lure Gus into the open. Hector meets with Hank Schrader at the DEA building under the guise of becoming an informant.

Walt's ploy works when Tyrus spots Hector leaving the DEA building. Suspecting Hector of being an informant, Tyrus alerts Gus.

Gus and Tyrus plan to kill Hector during a meeting in his nursing home room and Gus orders Hector to look at him. When a sorrowful-looking Hector finally looks at Gus something Gus wanted Hector to do all season , Hector's facial expression changes to wrath as he begins repeatedly ringing his bell.

Gus realizes that the bell is attached to a bomb under Hector's wheelchair and tries to run, but is caught in the explosion.

Hector and Tyrus are instantly killed, while Gus dies a few moments after leaving the room. Mike refuses, but Hector makes repeated attempts to intimidate Mike into accepting, from having men break into Mike's house to having The Cousins threaten Mike's granddaughter.

Despite complying with Hector's demands, Mike is not happy about the threats to Kaylee's life and retaliates by attacking an ice cream truck transporting Hector's drug cash.

Hector kills a witness who stopped to aid the driver, and later has the Cousins kill the driver and bury him in the desert. While Hector and the Cousins are preparing to kill the driver, Mike attempts to shoot Hector with a sniper rifle, but is stopped by someone unseen, who sets off his car horn and leaves a note warning him not to do it.

Mike later learns it was Gus who tracked his location and warned him against killing Hector; Gus intends to take over Hector's drug operation, and believes the time is not yet right.

Hector is in competition with Gus for control of cross-border drug smuggling. The conflict escalates after Mike attacks another of Hector's trucks, this time planting drugs and causing two of Hector's drivers to get arrested at the customs inspection station.

Juan Bolsa directs Gus to take over transportation of Hector's drugs, not realizing this is exactly what Gus wants. After Hector starts planning to take over Nacho's father's business for his own use, Nacho turns on Hector and enacts a plan where he switches out Hector's heart medication for ibuprofen.

Hector suffers a stroke while meeting with Gus and Juan Bolsa, but Gus saves him with CPR and he is taken to the hospital.

Gus arranges for a specialist, Dr. Maureen Bruckner, to be flown in from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore to oversee Hector's care.

Over the next few months, her therapy regimen restores Hector's mental faculties, but he's unable to speak and he's immobile except for the index finger of his right hand.

Gus has her discontinue treatment, effectively trapping his sound mind in his unhealed body. Tuco Salamanca played by Raymond Cruz is a Mexican drug kingpin, and nephew to Hector.

He is unpredictable and prone to violent outbursts, and often gets high on some of the drugs that lead to this behavior.

In flashbacks during Breaking Bad , it is shown that Hector often punished Tuco along with the Cousins as kids. When first introduced in Better Call Saul , Tuco is second-in-command of the Salamanca drug family in Albuquerque under Hector.

Tuco and his grandmother are inadvertently targeted as part of one of Jimmy's cons along with two skateboarders. Tuco along with Nacho takes Jimmy and the skateboarders out to the desert to kill them but Jimmy pleads for their release.

Tuco eventually gives in, breaking one leg of each of the skateboarders as a warning and letting them go, though Nacho recognizes Jimmy as a shrewd lawyer going forward from the incident.

Later, Nacho recognizes Tuco's behavior within the Salamancas has become more erratic. Having seen Mike's methods before, Nacho asks Mike if he could help assassinate Tuco, but Mike suggests an alternate plan instead: Mike creates a situation in which Tuco threatens him with a gun in front of the police, resulting in Tuco being charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Hector convinces Mike to claim the gun was his, so that Tuco is convicted on a lesser charge of assault and receives a shorter sentence.

However, while in prison, Tuco stabs another inmate and injures a corrections officer, adding more time to his sentence.

At the end of season five, approximately four years before the Breaking Bad events, Lalo tells Hector that Tuco has roughly a year left on his sentence.

At the start of events of Breaking Bad , Tuco is one of the first major drug deals that Walt and Jesse approach to sell their product.

After Walt and Jesse witness him brutally assault and murder one of his henchmen, they plan to poison him by coating their next delivery of meth with ricin.

The Drug Enforcement Administration DEA raids Tuco's headquarters before they can execute their plan. Tuco then carjacks Jesse and kidnaps him and Walt, suspecting they reported the murder to the authorities.

Tuco forces Walt and Jesse into Jesse's trunk, and drives to the remote desert house of his uncle, Hector , who cannot walk or speak due to a previous stroke.

He reveals that his cousins Leonel and Marco are coming to the house to take them all to Mexico, where Walt will cook his blue meth for the cartel.

Thinking Hector is unaware of his surroundings, Walt sprinkles Tuco's food with ricin while Tuco is not looking, but Hector foils the plan.

Tuco realizes what Walt intended and attacks Jesse while threatening to kill him with an M16 rifle. During the ensuing scuffle, Jesse shoots Tuco in the abdomen.

Hank arrives, having followed the LoJack signal of Jesse's car in the belief that Jesse is selling marijuana to Walt. Walt and Jesse hide nearby and see Tuco stagger to Jesse's car, recover his rifle, and fire at Hank.

Hank returns fire with a Glock pistol and kills Tuco. Leonel and Marco Salamanca played by Daniel and Luis Moncada , referred to as "The Cousins", are hitmen for Don Eladio's drug cartel.

Their austere, mechanical physicality and virtually non-verbal interaction makes them a fearsome presence and they kill without hesitation or emotion.

Leonel and Marco's killings included the decapitation by machete of Tortuga, whose head was then attached to a tortoise as part of a bomb which inflicted casualties on several DEA agents.

After Marco caught his breath, Hector reinforced the lesson that "family is all. In Better Call Saul the Cousins serve as Hector's enforcers.

They are first shown threatening Mike's granddaughter Kaylee when Mike refuses to recant his testimony against Tuco.

When Mike is waiting to shoot Hector from a hilltop with a sniper rifle, he sees Leonel and Marco kill the Salamanca's ice cream truck driver and drug smuggler Ximenez Lecerda, who Mike had robbed a few days earlier.

When Hector suffers a stroke, a result of taking placebo medication that Nacho had planted instead of his nitroglycerin pills for his heart condition, the Cousins quickly arrive to watch over Hector at the hospital and refuse to leave his side.

Gus, who has a vested interest in deciding Hector's fate as revenge for Max, arranges for a skilled therapist fluent in Spanish to see to Hector's recovery and explain his health to the Cousins.

Separately, Gus learns what Nacho did with the pills, and forces Nacho to become his mole. To establish this story, Gus kills Arturo the next time he and Nacho come to pick up the Salamanca supply of drugs, and has their car driven to the remote desert and fired repeatedly into it, and then critically wound Nacho to make it look like a rival gang attacked and stole the drugs.

Nacho calls the Cousins for help, who come to destroy the evidence, take Nacho to Dr. Caldera for immediate help, and then attack the headquarters of the rival drug gang to recover the "stolen" drugs that Gus had planted there.

As their activities have drawn police attention, the Cousins return to Mexico. This gives Gus the opportunity to dismiss the therapist and leave Hector in a state where he can only move his eyes and his right index finger.

In addition, the Cousins' slaughter of the gang gives Gus the opportunity to take over the gang's territory for himself.

After getting bailed out, Lalo initially plans to have the Cousins pick him up, but later changes his mind and has Nacho drive him to Mexico instead.

In Breaking Bad , following the death of their cousin Tuco, the cartel sent them to New Mexico to find Tuco's killer.

En route to being smuggled into the US, they hid with other undocumented immigrants in the back of a hay truck, and killed the entire group when one recognized them by their silver skull boot tips.

Victor told Gus, who contacted the cousins telling them to abort, so they left without Walter knowing they had been there. Mike later found outside Walt's house a chalk drawing of a scythe, which he believed the Cousins have left to send the message that their murder of Walt was imminent.

Gus redirected the Cousins by telling them Hank killed Tuco, and he told them they had his permission to kill Hank even though the cartel refrained from killing law enforcement officers, because that would draw undue attention to their activities.

Leonel and Marco moved to kill Hank, but Gus anonymously warned Hank just before the confrontation. Aware of the threat, Hank saw Leonel advancing on him and backed his car up quickly, trapping Leonel between his car and another, which crushed Leonel's legs.

Marco opened fire on Hank, who escaped out the passenger side door and crawled away. Marco strode after Hank, shooting and killing a passerby who surprised him, while another bystander escaped the same fate when Marco stopped to reload.

Hank then surprised Marco from behind and shot him in the chest four times, but all four bullets were stopped by Marco's bulletproof vest.

Marco shot Hank twice in the chest, but rather than finish him off with another shot, Marco returned to his car for an axe.

Hank took advantage of the pause to load Leonel's empty gun with a hollow-point round that Marco had dropped next to him. When Marco re-approached Hank, Hank killed him with a shot to the head.

To silence Leonel while he was in the hospital following his leg amputation, Gus distracted the police assigned to the security detail by bringing them food from Los Pollos Hermanos, giving Mike the opportunity to sneak into Leonel's room and administer a lethal injection.

Leonel died, and Mike quietly disposed of the syringe he used, unnoticed by the police officers nearby. Gaff played by Maurice Compte is a member of Don Eladio's drug cartel.
